Looking Forward to New Opportunities February 19, 2021

Coos Bay has been a long-time supporter and member of the South Coast Development Council, more commonly known as SCDC, since its inception when former Senator Joanne Verger served as Coos Bay’s Mayor. SCDC is a 501(c)3 nonprofit regional economic development organization with a mission to promote and support businesses that provide quality jobs through responsible development on Oregon’s South Coast. SCDC functions as our regional first-stop for economic development resources and opportunities.

I was excited to hear the news earlier this week that the former Georgia-Pacific mill site in Bunker Hill had been purchased by Commercial Development Company, Inc.  (CDC). Our City Manager and I had the pleasure of meeting with representatives from CDC several months ago when they were undergoing their due diligence process when considering to purchase the 162-acre former lumber mill property.

The former mill site has tremendous potential. The industrial property has easy access to Hwy 101, two rail spurs onsite, and two onsite deep-water docks. Based on a recent news release, the new owners will now perform some needed demolition at the site, liquidate surplus equipment, remediate environmental issues and prepare the site for redevelopment, just as they have done with many other brownfield properties acquired by them in the past.

I am looking forward to seeing how this property will be repurposed and put back into productive use. Hats off to Shaun Gibbs, SCDC Executive Director, and his team at SCDC, as they played a key role in working with CDC during the acquisition process.
