Preventing Neighborhood Sewer Blockages May 15, 2018
Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) are a continuing problem nationwide. Many times, they are the culprit in causing sewer blockages which create sanitary sewer overflows. Every household can do its part to help prevent neighborhood sewer blockages. Individual efforts can reduce the unforeseen sewer maintenance and operation expenses, as well as reduce the public health risks associated with the overflows.
Ways you can help prevent FOG blockages:
- Placing cooled cooking oil, poultry fats, and meat fats in a sealed non-recyclable container and discard with your regular garbage.
- Use paper towels to wipe residual grease or oil off dishes, pots, and pans prior to washing them.
- Use sink strainers to catch food waste.
- Put all food scraps in the trash, not through the garbage disposal.
