Responsibilities

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs paraprofessional work assisting Librarians in technical processing, programming, and service desk functions.  Performs related work as required. Employees in this class exercise considerable judgment and the work only reviewed periodically.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Works under the day-to-day supervision of the Librarians. The Assistant Library Director reviews and evaluates work for conformance with established library policies and procedures.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervision of other employees is not a normal responsibility of an employee in this class.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK:  An employee in this classification may perform any of the following duties. However, these examples do not include all the specified tasks which an employee may be expected to perform.

  1. Performs high level of customer service at various service points
  2. Assists with cataloging and processing of library materials 
  3. Maintains quality of data in ILS database
  4. Implements programming for various age groups as directed 

Qualifications

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:  Demonstrated knowledge of practices, principles and philosophy of modern library science including reference tools, library classification systems, and alphanumeric organization. Skill and ability to operate and maintain computers and other library or office equipment. Specific knowledge of, and demonstrated ability to accomplish, library materials acquisitions, cataloging and classification, and technical processing is required. Ability to verify bibliographic information using AACR2, and MARC is required. A Library Assistant II Competency Test will be administered.

Must have ability to pay close attention to detail, and produce accurate work in a technological environment. Ability to understand oral and written instructions and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with co-workers and the general public and to function within a team in providing library service. Ability to work under pressure at busy public service desks.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Must be able to develop and maintain positive cooperative team-oriented relationships with co-workers, supervisors, managers, and other you come in contact with. 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:  Two years of library or related experience required. Graduation from high school or the equivalent GED certificate required. College level course work in library science or related field preferred. Any other satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training which demonstrates the ability to perform the work may be considered.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:  Copy and fax machines, phone, networked personal computers and printers, light pen and scanner, standard office software applications including word processing, spreadsheet and email, postage meter, book trucks, simple repair tools, glue gun and supplies such as adhesives, marking pens or correction fluid.

Ability to speak in order to interact with library users and co-workers. Ability to move from one area to another quickly. Ability to reach arms above head to place or retrieve objects weighing up to ten pounds on 7-foot shelves. Ability to bend, kneel, sit, twist, squat, stand, crawl, climb and balance and to change positions quickly and frequently.  Ability to use both hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls. Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus while engaged in tasks such as checking patron identification, recognizing patrons for identification purposes, locating books or other materials on library shelves, reconciling book shipments with invoices, monitoring children’s movements during programs. Ability to use eyes, hands and fingers simultaneously.  Ability to hear in order to interact with library users or co-workers in an immediate way.

Ability to push and pull book trucks with a force of up to 2.75 pounds. Ability to lift and carry piles of books or supplies weighing up to 25 pounds. Ability to spend up to eight hours at a public service desk, with standard meal and rest breaks. Ability to use a personal computer and online terminal to access, input, retrieve and manipulate data in an efficient manner, including times of simultaneous interaction with library users and co-workers. Ability to frequently and quickly communicate using a telephone and email.

Ability to learn detailed library practices and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, with staff, volunteers and library users. Ability to gather, read, interpret, organize and apply sometimes large volumes of detailed information related to library services. Ability to exercise good judgment in interpreting library policies and procedures. Ability to make decisions based on pertinent criteria. Ability to efficiently plan and organize personal daily tasks and some of the overall activities within the division. Ability to use basic math skills in order to carry out tasks such as making change, interpreting fines, processing invoices, maintaining records. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to sort numerically, using whole numbers and decimals. Ability to alphabetize using the English language alphabet. Ability to shift quickly back and forth between mental tasks.

Work environment includes the presence of book dust; concrete floors; close proximity to operating machines; central air conditioning; fluorescent lights; frequent interruptions from telephone, people and equipment; sharing work stations with other staff and volunteers; contact with library users from all walks of life with varying physical and mental abilities.
